I liked the idea about making tamers less totally passive in combat, I had been thinking about trying to make a Digimon tabletop as well when I stumbled across this, and I want to help out if I can. My idea was that the tamers would have a ‘Memory’ or ‘RAM’ stat that determined things like how high of a digivolution they can use. This idea was partially inspired by the cards from tamer.
Point is higher digivolutions, require more memory. However you can use excess memory to run programs that can help your partner, and provide some incentive for not always using the highest possible digivolution. When you execute a program it uses some of the memory until the end of the fight, but is restored immediately at the end. When a digimon de-digivolves in combat, half the difference in memory is refunded.
Also similar to a Tamer has a type that determine the programs they can use that is linked to the type of their digimon’s rookie form. Programmers -> Data; Hackers -> Virus, and White-hat (name may need work) -> Vaccine. Generally speaking Programers add functions to things or create new items, so a programmer may grant a Digimon the ability to fly, or add an aspect to the environment that everyone can use, or create a barrier that blocks attacks. Hackers subvert the purpose of a given program, they can also destroy and corrode data. Direct attacks, the ability to apply status effects and other debuffs, prevent an in-battle digivolution (except armor) were all ideas I had for my theoretical system. The White-hats have programs related to restoring damaged data, preventing unwanted interference, and eliminating threats to a system. Healing digimon, purging all modifications to a digimon, or creating weapons to allow them to wade in themselves are all options for a white-hat.
The main point is to add a level of resource management, an addition layer of tactics, and to help keep lower forms relevant as the campaign continues, as there may be a situation where you would prefer to have an Ultimate and some programs for support as opposed to the raw combat power of a mega. If there is interest I can post some rough draft programs and things like that.
